THE SLOW SUMMER

May 3, 1887

William Scott is one tough son of a bitch. One month after being shot through the lung, he’s riding on horseback from Hemphill into San Augustine. He’s not alone: Dr. Tucker attends him during the trip, and Private Ed Randall joins them as a well-armed orderly. They’ll head on to Nacogdoches to catch the next train to Dallas, where Rangers’ families are eager to see them.

A Galveston Daily News correspondent calls on Scott and finds him tired but spirited:

Captain Scott was lying down, being a little fatigued from riding. He seems rapidly improving and thinks it will be but a short time until he will be able to be at his post of duty again. He does not seem to be tired of the Ranger life; talks of the fight with the Conners like a frolic, but a right serious one, and seems very anxious to try it over.27
